We define a mix as a creative work made using third-party copyrighted music (source music). Types of mixes include: remixes, mash-ups, DJ sets, sample-based beats, mixtapes, and videos containing copyrighted music.

Legitmix uses the copyrighted music that you identify and your mix to create a Legitmix file. A consumer can then use your Legitmix file, the Legitmix software and their copy of the copyrighted music to recreate your mix.

You can legally sell your mixes without having to obtain distribution licenses for the third-party music you use to produce your mixes.

When creating your Legitmix file, you identify the third-party copyrighted music used in your mix. This allows consumers to purchase and recreate your mix on their own computer.

Rather than capturing how the expression (audio) of the source music is manipulated to create a mix, Legitmix, using the binary representation of the source music and the binary data contained in the mix file, captures mathematically how the binary representations of the sources are transformed. The Legitmix process is oblivious to the expression of the sources or how the source audio was manipulated to create the mix.

The result or output of this mathematical operation is the Legitmix file, which is not an “expression” or sound and which cannot alone be used in any way to express (play) the source music or the mix. You must use the Legitmix file together with your own copies of the source music to recreate the mix. You can only recreate a mix if you have all the source music used by the mix artist in creating the Legitmix file. In making the Legitmix file(s) available to you, neither the mix artist nor Legitmix distributes or licenses any source music to anyone. It is and remains your responsibility to purchase the source music required to recreate the mix.

No, but if there hasn’t been any activity in your account for over 12-months, we’ll automatically pay out any balance in your account.

Yes. Go to the Settings page and select 'My Legitmixes'.

You may request payout on your artist settings page any time after your account has reached a balance of at least 5 dollars. Legitmix uses Paypal to pay out artist. You can sign up of a free account at Paypal.com

Legitmix reserves the right to deactivate any account that had remained dormant for at least 12 months. Any remaining balance will be paid out to the address on record.

Yes, provided the track can be purchased from a supported retailer (Legitmix or iTunes).

Unfortunately you cannot create a Legitmix file. All source tracks must be available for purchase from a supported retailer.

Then you can't create a Legitmix for your mix. You must identify all the third-party copyrighted material used in your mix.

You retain copyright over your original material. When a consumer purchases your Legitmix file, they get a license to your material in the recreated mix.

When creating a Legitmix, you must precisely identify the songs in your mix. For example, if you identify a “live” version of a song used in your mix, the consumer will have to provide the same live version to recreate your mix.

Yes and the price of the mix you use will be added to the retail price of yours. To apply to have this function added to your account, please contact support@legitmix.com.

You must identify the commercially available acapella itself or the source track from which you obtained the acapella.

Yes. You must lawfully obtain (purchase or be given) the source music you identify as being used in your mix. You must have created the mix or have permission from the mix owner to use it to create a Legitmix file. Your mix cannot contain any third-party copyrighted content other than the identified source music. See the Legitmix Software License Agreement for more details.

Yes. You can stream your mix on Legitmix for free, but if you would like to make it available for purchase or download there is a one time fee of $2 per source track identified.

Yes. There are cases in which you may want to use Legitmix to release your work for free to gain exposure, but keep in mind the consumer must buy the source music you used to make your mix if they do not already own it.

No. Neither the source music nor the mix is copied into the Legitmix file. The data in the Legitmix file has no relationship to the protected expression of either the music sources or the mix and cannot be played as an audio file. Its purpose is to recreate the mix using the Legitmix Software together with the source music.

Yes, if you pay the required performance fees for the source music used to produce the mix to the pertinent performing rights societies or performance rights owner(s).

No. Legitmix does not prepare the derivative mix, and individuals have broad rights to make personal uses of their purchased copyrighted works. Legitmix allows individuals to exercise those rights with respect to their own copies of the source music.

A Legitmix file does not contain any unlicensed copyrighted material so we do not need other people's permission to distribute it. Essentially, Legitmix acts like a digital instruction set, which a consumer can use along with their copy of the identified source music to recreate your mix on their computer. This recreation is legal since the consumer has the right to mix music they own for personal use.

You can use the "internationalization" feature to release your mix outside of the United States (countries supported includes Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom). The option is found in a mix page's administration section (found under the mix cover art). You must be logged in to access the administration functions. After selecting "internationalize" you will be taken to the mix submission interface where you will select the country you want to release your mix. You will have to re-identify the sources but the rest of your mix information will be preserved. After releasing your mix, it will be available for purchase within 24 hours.

Legitmix Labels is a new feature that allows labels to release mixes on behalf of their artists. Labels accounts are available on a limited basis. Interested parties can contact our marketing team through relations@legitmix.com.

When releasing a mix using Legitmix, you must identify the source tracks you sampled. These source tracks are linked to the iTunes US store. So when a fan buys your mix, they will be directed to the iTunes US store to purchase any source tracks they are missing. International fans are directed to their local iTunes store. In most cases the source tracks will be available in the fan's local iTunes store but there are versions of source tracks only available in the US.

To address this issue, you can release a specific country (in addition to the US). We currently support releases in Canada, France, Germany and the UK. See "Internationalization" for more details.

Legitmix allows you to recreate an artist's mix using your purchased copy of the copyrighted music used to make the mix. If you don’t own the music, Legitmix will allow you to purchase it.

To legally distribute a mix, the mix artist must obtain distribution licenses for the music used in the mix. Given the high costs of obtaining licenses, this is difficult if not impossible for many mix artists. Even those that can obtain licenses usually can’t do so fast enough to keep up with changing tastes. So rather than putting the burden on mix artists to obtain distribution licenses for the copyrighted music used in their work, the Legitmix technology makes use of your purchased copies of the music.

Yes. In order to recreate a mix, you must possess all the required music.

Yes. Legitmix will search your iTunes library or your hard disk for the music needed to recreate a mix. If you have it, you do not need to purchase it again.

Legitmix will direct you to iTunes to purchase the missing sources needed.

Source music identified in the Legitmix store is only available for purchase in the US. You can still purchase and recreate the remix by buying the source tracks from your local retailer. Once you have purchased all the source tracks, click "Search and Save" to find them and you can proceed to recreate the remix.

No. Once your mix has been recreated on your computer, it is can be played/viewed normally.

Yes. Once recreated you can sync the media file with your iOS device.

We have partnered with MediaNet to sell source music offered by major and indi labels. You may be redirected to iTunes or Amazon for some source music tracks.

Right click the Legitmix icon in your system tray and select Quit. You will be asked to restart the Legitmix Service the next time you use the Legitmix Web Site.

If you don't see a light blue Legitmix icon in your system tray, you will need to start the Legitmix Service. To do so, click the "Start" link provided on the Legitmix Web Site or manually launch the Service (see "How do I start the Legitmix Service?").

When a new version of the Legitmix Service becomes available, you will be given the opportunity to upgrade your installed copy.

Right mouse click the Legitmix icon and select "Quit". Then restart the Legitmix Service (see "How do I start the Legitmix Service"). If the Legitmix icon in your system tray remains gray, please email us at support@legitmix.com.

Versions of OSX including Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and below are not 64-bit enabled and are not compatible with the Legitmix Service.

You will see a light blue Legitmix icon in your system tray.

You can start the Legitmix Service by clicking the Legitmix icon provided in the start menu (Windows) or your Applications folder (Macintosh).

The Legitmix Service is an application installed on your computer that allows the Legitmix Web Site to perform tasks such as searching your music library or recreating a remix. The Legitmix Service can only be used in conjunction with the Legitmix Web Site.

Legitmix runs on most Windows (WinXP SP2+), Macintosh (OSX 10.6.8+) and Linux based computers.

Legimix works with Chrome (8.0+), Firefox (3.0+), Internet Explorer (7+) and Safari (5.0+).

We support MP3 and AAC (M4A) and .Wav files.

An artist can charge you a fee to download their Legitmix file. You will only be charged once we have determined that you have all the source the music needed to recreate the mix.

You can pay using your credit card or PayPal account.

No. You can buy the source music separately from any online music store and start the source search process again. The sources you purchased will be found and used to recreate the mix.

Yes. You can recreate a mix up to five times at no extra cost.

It depends on your Internet connection and the length of the mix. With a high speed connection it takes about 20 seconds to recreate each minute of a mix.

It means that your source is perceptually different (i.e. sounds different) than the source used by the mix artist. For example you can’t use a studio version of a song to recreate a mix that was produced using the live version.

By identifying the source tracks they reuse, remixers can help create new sales of your source tracks. The Legitmix site and widget provides links directly to the sampled tracks along side the remix. A consumer must own the source music to recreate the remix. Rather than getting no benefit from remixes of your tracks on YouTube or SoundCloud, Legitmix directly promotes and sells your music.

Yes. Your users can post content to Legitmix without leaving your web site. You get 30% of the premium release fees paid by users who post from you site.

Yes. You can create a compilation of tracks and promote it on your web site. You get 5% of the sales of the tracks in your compilations purchased from the Legitmix store.
